MARGARITAVILLE LONGBOARD OPEN
AT MALIBU's SURFRIDER BEACH
The world's best women longboard surfers made history this weekend at Malibu's Surfrider State Beach when they competed in the Margaritaville
Longboard Open presented by Toes on the Noes this June 24th & 25th.  Strangely enough this was the very first open women's only longboard
competition with prize money ever.  Go figure. Stay tuned for the World finals in Boca Barranch Costa Rica on August 6-13, 2000.

Cassey  who took first place shows
her style on a Malibu wave
Malibu is a long-time surfing vortex with a natural affinity for amazing scenery.  The memorable meeting of land and sea is further enhanced  by a magnetic attraction for the  world's 'beautiful people.'  Legendary waves have been banging the Malibu shore for centuries but it took a small band of wartime kids to finally climb aboard some of the
biggest.  The first boards were red-wood, bals varnished to a high gloss.

L.P. Brown  interviews Cassey

Cassey receives her check for
$1,500. from Toes on the Nose Richard Allred and the event producer Hank Raymond.  Now she will be heading to Costa
Rica for the World Finals in
August.  Stay tuned for  coverage of this great sport. (right)

Championships
in COSTA RICA!!!!

Hey surfin' around Malibu is about as Hollywood as you can get...remember Beach Party and How
to Stuff a Wild Bikini and Ride the Wild Surf.   Remember some names like Annette Funicello,
Fabian and Frankie Avalon...now think The Endless Summer and Big Wednesday and Point
Break, In God's Hands, Gidget, Girl In The Curl...So there you see a little of the inspiration that
the waves have given to the movies.  Hey, Remember the Beach Boys early sixties music? Sure man!

Ashley  takes second place

sponsor Margaritaville Tequila.

This was a great event for fun in
the surf and sun for children and
families.  We thank the producers,
sponsors and city of Malibu for
this event, and hope to surf with
you next year.

Britney Lenoard takes 3rd place

Cassie, Britney, Hank, Ashley and Lorie
Women's longboard (defined as
minimum of nine feet) competitive
surfing for prize money has never
been conducted on the shores of
Malibu.  When surfing reached
its halcyon days during the 60s,
Surfrider State Beach was mobbed
with trendsetters and adventurers
from around the world.  Since then
thousands of women longboard
surfers have been "walking on
water" and have now been recog-
nized for their contributions to
the sport.
